Lucy’s Gluten Free Cookies

The folks at Lucy’s Cookies sent me several boxes of their cookies to try. They emailed and said they would like to give Udi’s Cookies a run for their money. So, I agreed to try them. While Udi’s Cookies are soft and chewy, Lucy’s are crisp and crunchy. They taste delicious, and do, in fact, meet the personal standard I have set for the ultimate in good gluten free cookies.

I tried the Lucy’s Chocolate cookies first, because, well, they’re chocolate. They have a wonderful chocolatey taste that is good all by itself. They taste sort of like a brownie, only crunchy. And because they are crunchy, you can use them to make an ice cream sandwich, or crush them up to make an excellent chocolate crumb pie crust.

One of my favorite cookies of all time, Ginger Snaps. I love these Lucy’s Cookies Ginger Snaps. I tried them plain with some hot tea. I tried them with peanut butter. And I tried them with soft goat cheese. All three ways were outstandingly delicious. I would also use these cookies to make a crumb crust for sweet potato or pumpkin pie.

I actually put off trying the Lucy’s Maple Bliss Cookies because I am not a fan of maple flavored anything. However, I will make an exception for these cookies. The maple flavor is not overwhelming. The cookies taste like oatmeal cookies with just a hint of maple. They would be good with some cream cheese or with some strawberry jam.

Memorable Gifts.com is an online store where you can purchase some unique and beautiful gifts. They sent me the  Family Tree with 4 Hanging Frames pictured above. My mother has one similar to this, and I have always wanted one. This was the first one I have found since I started looking for them more than forty years ago. This one has four frames included, and an engravable plate on the base. This piece would  make a truly memorable gift for anyone on your gift list.

The Family Tree frame I received is of good quality–I will be glad to display it in my home. The engraving I chose was “Our Lovely Family”, because my husband I have combined a family, with four children between us. Now I need one for the grandchildren’s photos!

My husband has a smoker for most of his adult life. He quit for about 2 years after he had treatment for cancer in  his mouth, but started back up, and was back to smoking more than a pack of cigarettes a day. He agreed to try out an electronic cigarette.

The e-cigarettes can be recharged up to 300 times and they offer stylish colors, 150 flavors and seven levels of nicotine for you to customize.The batteries look like cigarettes, but come in a variety of colors.

Vapor4Life send us an assortment of their products for him to try. We received two charging cases, 4 e-cigarette batteries, a USB charger and a car charger. They also sent an assortment of cartomizers in a variety of flavors. Because he was smoking a pack a day of a light cigarette, we ordered the 11 mg cartomizers, which is what the company recommended. They also included some of the 8 mg ones.

When the package arrived, we charged the batteries overnight, and the next day my husband started using the e-cigarette. He said right away that the cartomizers he received were too strong, so we ordered the lightest ones they had, the 4 mg ones. When he received the weaker 4 mg ones, he was able to fully enjoy using the e-cigarette.

He says that they do satisfy his need for nicotine, and allows him to “smoke” in places where regular cigarettes are not allowed. I do not allow him to smoke inside our house, so he can sit on the sofa in the living room and enjoy a smokeless Vapor4Life e-cigarette while we are watching a movie. He takes the carrying case with two batteries and some cartomizers when we go to visit someone who does not smoke, and sometimes uses it when he is driving. It has definitely cut down on the number of real cigarettes he smokes, but unfortunately, he has not yet quit smoking altogether. He does say that this is a good alternative for someone who has more will power than he does who wants to quit smoking cigarettes. He also suggests trying out several strengths and flavors of cartomizers to find one you will enjoy, as that is key to continued use of the product.

Kidde Fire Extinguisher Review and Giveaway

Back in 1984, my (then) husband and I bought a brand new house. We lived in it for less than two months before we experienced one of those worst nightmare scenarios: a fire in the kitchen!

I had gone to the store down the street to pick up a gallon of milk. When I returned home, less that twenty minutes later, my son, who was eleven years old at the time and who was always playing pranks on me, met me at the front steps and said “MOM! the house is on fire!” I brushed him aside and opened the front door. As soon as I did, thick black smoke poured out of the house and down the steps! I was terrified, because I knew my daughters and my husband were still in there!

It turned out that my husband (not the one I am married to now) had put a pan of cooking oil on the stove, and walked downstairs to watch part of a basketball game while he “waited for it to heat up.” The game heated up as soon as he walked into the family room, and he quickly forgot about that pot of grease.

At the time all this happened, we did not have a fire extinguisher in the house. If we had had one, the damage caused by the fire might not have been as extensive as it was. I am here to tell you, IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE!

I try to tell people at every opportunity to get a fire extinguisher in their home, and have a family evacuation plan so that when a fire happens, everyone in the home will know what to do and where to go. The small amount of money you will pay for a fire extinguisher, a smoke alarm, and an escape ladder will be nothing compared to the safety or your family!

The Kitchen Fire Extinguisher they sent me is small, lightweight at only 3 lbs., and has instructions on how to use it printed right on the side of it. It comes with a bracket for hanging it on the wall, so you can put somewhere in easy reach. You should teach everyone in your family how to use it and when, and be sure to replace it when it expires, which is in 12 years.

Along with a Kitchen Fire Extinguisher, you should also have a smoke alarm in your home. A smoke alarm can wake you up if a fire starts in your home at night, and can save your life! Change the batteries when you set your clocks back and forth each spring and fall. An escape ladder for every room on second and third floors is also a good idea.
