Old El Paso Taco Night

Old El Paso Taco Seasoning Mix

I received a taco nigh tpack from Old El Paso and My Blogspark in the mail. It included a package of Old El Paso Taco Seasoning Mix, three chili pepper plastic plates, a cactus chip and dip tray and a $10 Visa gift card to use when purchasing the rest of the items to make my taco nigh tmeal.

These cute dishes made dinner fun!

I had used Old El Paso Taco Seasoning in the past, but had not thought about it lately. I was glad to learn that it is gluten free–it makes a safe, quick meal for us. Our taco night was the night before we packed up the RV and left the North Rim for the long trek back to Alabama. I wanted something that would be good, filling, quick to make and easy to clean up. Tacos was just right for that.

1 Lb Ground Beef

All it takes to make 12 tacos is a pound of ground beef, some water, and the Old El Paso Taco Seasoning Mix. While you are browning the ground beef, you can either chop up some tomatoes, lettuce, and onions, or do what I did and just set out some premade Pico de Gallo from the grocery store.

Pico de Gallo, sliced tomato, chopped jalapeno, and shredded cheese.

I chopped a jalapeno pepper, opened a package of shredded cheese, and sliced our last yellow tomato from the farmers market. Heat up a can of Old El Paso Refried Beans and your dinner is complete.

Old El Paso Taco Shells

Open the box of Old El Paso Taco Shells, arrange them on a plate, and heat them up in the microwave. Dinner is served!

If you’d like to win a prize pack like the one I received, just leave a comment telling me what night you would do taco night at your house. I’ll pick a winner at random from the comment entries on November 7, 2010. Be sure to include an email address so I can notify you if you are the winner.  And, to get a coupon for 60 cents off any two Old El Paso products, click here.

Applegate Farms Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets

If you are a someone who eats gluten free, when was the last time you had some chicken nuggets? For me, it has been since April 2007. That changed yesterday when my samples of Applegate Farms Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets arrived.

These nuggets are delicious! Even my non-gluten free husband enjoyed them. And they were so easy to prepare: Just pop them in the oven for 12 minutes, turn them over one time half way through the cooking time, and they are done. They can also be cooked in the microwave. The package says “Our gluten free chicken nuggets are ready to heat, so you can spend more time tickling your kids.” Don’t you just love that?

Applegate Farms Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets would be a perfect choice for hot hors d’œuvres  at a party, as an after school snack, or served with vegetables for dinner. I served mine with a homemade honey mustard sauce, and sides of steamed spinach and potatoes.

Manischewitz Chicken Broth

The Manischewitz Company sent me samples of their Chicken Broth to try out. I have seen their products in the grocery store for as long as I can remember, but I have never bought them. I was surprised to learn that they have quite a few gluten free items in their product line. As a matter of fact, there are over 60 items on their gluten free list!

The chicken broth comes in both regular and low sodium varieties in 32 oz shelf stable boxes; and condensed in 10.5 oz cans. It tasted very good in the southern style chicken and dumplings I made with it. Since I normally boil a chicken to make homemade broth for my dumplings, I was quite pleased to find a broth that tasted good enough to use out of the box–it will be a real time saver for me.

Manischewitz Chicken Broth is all natural, kosher, and contains no MSG or gluten. On the back of the box, they say “…The soothing aroma and rich flavor of Chicken Noodle Soup will always bring back fond memories of Mom lovingly nursing you back to health when you had a cold. Some moms even call it “Jewish Pencillin”.  Manischiwetz has been helping moms create their signature soup recipes for over 50 years…”.

Ingredients: Chicken stock (water, chicken), salt, flavorings, chicken fat, yeast extract, evaporated cane juice sugar, carrot juice concentrate, celery juice concentrate, and onion juice concentrate.

Manischewitz Beef Broth

Manischewitz Beef Broth was the first beef broth I have ever used.  I have used chicken broth in many things, but never beef. The broth added a great beefy flavor to the dish I made, and wasn’t too salty tasting.

I used my sample to make a one dish meal (I forgot to take a picture!):

1 bell pepper, slice
1 onion, cut in quarters and sliced
1 cup sliced mushrooms
3-4 cloves garlic, chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil
¾ lb gr meat (I use 1/3 beef, 1/3 gr turkey, and 1/3 gr pork)
1 cup uncooked rice
2 ½ cups Manischewitz Beef Broth

Sautee the vegetables in olive oil until done, set aside. Crumble the ground meat in the same pan and cook until browned. Drain off grease. Add the cooked vegetables, rice and broth to the pan and stir. Simmer on medium low heat, covered, for 25 minutes.

Manichewitz Beef Broth is all natural, kosher, has no msg and is gluten free. It comes in a 32 oz resealable box and is shelf stable for up to a year unopened. Refrigerate after opening.

Ingredients:Beef stock (water, salt, beef), yastr extract, canola oil, caramel color, evaporated cane juice sugar, vegetable concentrate (carrot, celery, and onions), natural flavorings.

Manischewitz Potato Pancakes

Today I am going to tell you about Manichewitz Potato Pancake Mix. It was really easy to make: just add an egg and a cup of water, mix, and let sit for five minutes. Drop by tablespoonfuls into a skillet with oil and fry until golden brown on each side. It only took about 20 minutes from box to table.

The pancakes tasted very good—we ate them for breakfast with scrambled eggs one morning, and for dinner with hamburgers one evening. I made mine according to the directions on the box, but they also suggested adding chopped onions and peppers, and that sounded really good, too.

Ingredients: Potatoes (contains sulfites to maintain whiteness), potato starch, salt, onion, vegetable shortening (partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil).

Calories: 80 in 3 pancakes  Carbohydrate: 18 grams

Manischewitz Potato Pancakes can be found in most grocery stores in the ethnic foods aisle.  At my local Winn Dixie store, the cost for the 3 oz box was $3.49.  They can also be ordered online at Amazon.com.
