Mi-Del Arrowroot Cookies

I have been eating Mi-Del Cookies almost as long as I have been eating a gluten free diet. I love their Arrowroot Cookies because they taste so good. I use them instead of vanilla wafers when I make gluten free banana pudding, and no one can tell the difference in taste. Of course they are animal crackers, so they do look different but they really do  make a good substitute for those other cookies.

Mi-Del has been in business for over 50 years, and they have used the same simple methods to bake their cookies since the beginning. They don’t use any food additives and they package their products in a simple paper bag. They also have Chocolate Chip, Ginger Snap, and Smores gluten free cookies in their line up.

The ingredients in Arrowroot Cookies:

Gluten free flour (corn flour, soy flour, potato flour, rice flour, corn starch, potato starch, xanthan gum), organic dehydated cane juice, canola oil, arrowroot flour, butter (may contain annatto), corn starch, honey, natural flavors, eggs, soy lecithin (used as an emulsifier), baking soda, sea salt.

I received a box of assorted Glenny’s Snacks to try–I was absolutely amazed at the variety of snacks they offer!  While not all of their products are gluten free, the ones that are were pretty good. Take a look at this assortment. There was so much I couldn’t get it all in one pic:

When I got this package in the mail, I couldn’t decide where to start. The first thing I tried was the Creamy Ranch Soy Crisps. It was the first time I had ever tried a soy crisp, so I was pleasantly surprised at the crunchy texture, and the taste of them. I will definitely be buying some of these. The Barbecue flavor was my favorite, which was surprising to me because I don’t like barbecue potato chips.

Nutrition Facts for Soy Chips (Creamy Ranch flavor):

Calories per serving: 70 (2) servings per 1.3 oz bag, Total Carbohydrate 9 grams

Ingredients: Low fat non-GMO soy flour, rice, buttermilk powder, cheddar cheese powder, (pasteurized milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes, whey, maltodextrin, soybean oil, buttermilk, citric acid, natural flavors, disidium phosphate, lactic acid), mid oleic sunflower oil, sea salt, tomato powder, autolyzed yeast, onion powder, dextrose, garlic powder, dehydrated cane juice, natural flavor, malic acid, spice, sodium diacetate.

The second thing I tried was the Gluten Free Oatmeal Raisin Cookies. They were moist, and soft, and tasted to me like  “real” (wheat) cookies. My non-gluten free husband ate the entire box except for the one I ate to try them out. For him to keep going back to these cookies, when he had some regular cookies in the house, says a lot for the taste and texture of them.

Mary’s Love Cookies Give Away

I’ve been a fan of Mary’s Gone Crackers snacks since I started eating gluten free. They have been some of my favorites, so when I read that they were introducing cookies, I had to have some! The folks over at Mary’s sent me some of each of their three flavors: Chocolate Chip, Ginger Snap, and “N,Oatmeal” Raisin.

Since Ginger Snaps were  always one of my favorite cookies, I tried those first. I wasn’t disappointed, either. These cookies had a great flavor, and the same hardness I have always enjoyed in ginger snaps. They taste great by themselves, with peanut butter, and with cream cheese.

The Chocolate Chip cookies have a good flavor, and just the right amount of chocolate chips. They are good with a bowl of ice cream or with milk. And the “N’Oatmeal Raisin tasted good, and were nice and chewy.

Mary’s Love Cookies are all organic, kosher, Non-GMO, wheat-free, gluten-free, vegan and dairy free. They are made with low glycemic sweeteners and chia seeds, and have no hydrogenated oils and no trans-fats.

Manischewitz Gluten Free Products Give Away!

I have been eating a gluten free diet for three years now, so I am always looking for new and different gluten free foods.  When I was asked to try some products from the Manischewitz company, I really was surprised to learn that they have so many gluten free items in their line.

If you’re like me, you have probably seen their products on the shelves in grocery stores and never given them a second thought.  After all, I’m not Jewish, and I am not restricted to a kosher diet.

Manischewitz has been in business for 120 years, and are the largest manufacturer of processed kosher food products in the country. “Today, a growing number of consumers are buying kosher products, not for religious reasons, but because they perceive these products to be “healthier” like organic and natural food.”(* from the Manischewitz website). Their Health Corner page has a long list of not only gluten free items, but several other allergens free items as well.

They sent me samples of some of their products, and I have to tell you, all of them that I have tried are really good.

The Potato Pancake Mix was very easy to prepare—just add an egg and water, let sit for five minutes, and fry up. They were quite tasty as a side dish for either breakfast or dinner, and needed no additional seasonings

The Chicken Broth made a delicious batch of southern style chicken and dumplings.  And the Chocolate Chip Macaroons were divine!

Because they were so generous with their samples, I am having a give away to share them. I would love to keep them all for myself, but I live in a tiny RV trailer and have no room to store them all. If you would like to win one of three gift packs consisting of 1 of each of the 10 items I received, here is what you need to do:

Check out the Manischewitz website, and then come back here and leave a comment, telling me what item in their product line you would like most.

And for a second chance to win, check out the review of Manischewitz products at MomGadget, and leave a comment there.  I’ll be giving away three prizes in all, open to United States residents only. Last day to enter will be February 14, 2010.

Mi-Del Gluten Free Ginger Snaps

Mi-del ginger snaps

These gluten free ginger snaps by Mi-Del have been one of my favorite cookies since I started eating gluten free two and a half years ago. They are hard like regular ginger snaps, and have just the right amount of sweetness, too. I like them plain, or with some cream cheese or peanut butter on them.

Yesterday, I had a pot-luck dinner to attend, and I wanted to make a home made pumpkin pie to take to it. As I was trying to figure out what to do for the crust, I remembered that I had a bag of Mi-Del Gluten Free Ginger Snaps in the cupboard. So, I made a crumb crust using them. Everyone, even the wheat eaters at the party, raved about the pie. As a matter of fact, they ate it all  up. See:

Ginger snaps crumb crust

I used this recipe to make my crust, but because gluten free flours don’t absorb butter like wheat flour does, next time I would use half as much butter to make the crust.

Mi-Del Gluten Free Ginger Snaps come in an 8 oz. bag. The ingredients from the side of the bag:

Gluten free flour (corn flour, soy flour, potato flour, rice flour, corn starch, potato starch, xanthan gum); organic dehydrated cane juice; canola oil; unsulphered molasses; ginger; soy lecithin (used as an emulsifier); eggs; baking soda; sea salt; natural flavor.

There is also an allergy warning on the bag: Produced in a facility that also processes or handles wheat, milk, peanuts, and tree nuts. Mi-Del gluten free products are routinely tested using the ELISA method to ensure gluten free status as determined by the World Health Organization.

Mi-Del also makes Cinnamon Snaps, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Pecan Cookies, Arrowroot Cookies, Chocolate Sandwich Cookies, and Royal Vanilla Sandwich Cookies.

Pamela’s Chocolate Chunk Cookie Mix

Pamelas Chocolate Chunk Cookie Mix

The front of the bag says “Fast, Easy, Delicious”, and I found that to be true.  To make these cookies, just add 1 stick of butter or margarine, 1 egg, and 1 tablespoon of water. Beat the butter or margarine, then add the egg, water and contents of the bag. Mix one minute. Drop by tablespoons onto a greased cookie sheet, and bake @ 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

When you take them out of the oven, let them cool for a couple of minutes on the cookie sheet, then remove to a paper towel lined plate.

Pamelas cookie mix

The cookies have big chunks of chocolate in them, and cook up just right with a little crunch, a little chewiness. They taste AWESOME!  Some of the best gluten free chocolate chip cookies I have ever had.

Suggestions on the side of the bag are for Peanut Butter Chunk Cookies–add 1/2 cup peanut butter and 1/4 cup water, mix as above, and bake.  They also suggest making crumbs out of the Chocolate Chunk Cookies to use as a crust for a chocolate cream pie or a cheesecake. Mmmm, sounds very good to me!

Pamelas Cookie Mix

Ingredients: Organic chocolate chunks (organic natural evaporated cane sugar, organic chocolate liquor, organic cocoa butter, non-GMO soy lecithin/emulsifier, organic vanilla.  Chunks may contain traces of milk protein due to manufacturing equipment.); Organic natural cane sugar, brown rice flour, brown sugar, white rice flour, tapioca starch, sweet rice flour, grainless and aluminum-free baking powder (sodium bicarbonate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, potato starch), sea salt, organic cocoa power (processed with alkali), gluten-free natural flavor (contains corn derivative), xanthan gum, baking soda.

Fabgrandpa, who does not have to eat gluten free, LOVED these cookies. I will be buying more–I’m gonna make a pie crust next time!.
